The PTO has a save the date for their annual trivia night event in this week’s mail!  This event is an incredibly fun one for parents and acts as the largest fundraiser of the year.  We hope to see you there!

Riverside Brookfield High School is changing some of its 8th grade testing from years past.  This year, the Honors Geometry and Spanish 2 test will be administered at the feeder middle school during our academic day.  The Spanish 2 test will be administered on January 15th and the Honors Geometry test will be on the 16th.  The Honors Geometry test is typically taken by those students who are enrolled in an Algebra course at SEG.  Your children’s math teachers have talked with the students about this already.  The Spanish test is open to all students, but is typically administered to those who have taken 7th and 8th grade Spanish at SEG or those who are native speakers, but may not have taken Spanish.  Your child’s Spanish teachers have talked with them about this as well.  If you have further questions please reach out to us for answers.

Please remember that middle school entrance should be complete by 8:05am.  Students arriving after this time will be considered tardy as we have completed our attendance roles in homeroom.  Even though the Lincoln door is open later, after 8:05am that entrance time is for Kindergarten students.  Thank you for your assistance.

Students return on Monday, January 7th.

From all the staff here at S.E. Gross Middle School, we wish all of you a very happy holiday season filled with family and friends!

Happy Friday everyone!

Come out and support our wonderfully talented performers tonight at Barnes and Noble in Oakbrook from 4:00 – 9:00pm!  Over 70 students will be performing over the course of the night either in our Warrior band and chorus or for the Jam Session or ukulele clubs!  By coming and shopping at B&N you will also be supporting our PTO and the Brook Park BPC as proceeds from all sales will go to fund additional materials for our school libraries!  What a great night it will be!

Beauty and the Beast

Be our guest at Brook Park Elementary where our supremely talented cast will perform Beauty and the Beast on December 19th and  20th at 6:15pm.  There are day performances, but they will be strictly limited to Brook Park students on the 19th and SEG students on the 20th.  Anyone who comes for the day events will be turned away as we will be at capacity seating with student attendance.  The night performances are open to all.  All SEG students during the day will be transported to and from Brook Park via First Student bus.

World Record

SEG physical education classes participated in being a part of a Guinness Book of World Records event and succeeded in helping to set a new world record for sport stacking.  Ms. Janetopoulos has included the letter of accomplishment in this week’s email.

School Closed Monday, November 26th

Dear Parents: I apologize for the late notice, but D 95 schools will be closed tomorrow. Calling a snow day may seriously be one of the most difficult decisions a superintendent makes. The difficulty about making the decision is we rely on predictions from weather experts who all seem to have various degrees of certainty. The timing of the impending storm has made this a tough call. Safety is a priority for D95 students, and the best information says we should not be open tomorrow. Again, it is always our preference to notify you earlier, but the timing of this weather system caused us some delay in decision-making. Be safe in your endeavors tomorrow.

Dr. Kuzniewski

Illinois School Report Card

For many years District 95 has stressed the importance of focusing on student growth and working to meet the varied needs of our students to promote their success.  We have developed our curriculum and tailored our instructional practices to make sure that all of our students are learning and growing.  In the new Illinois School Report Card, our commitment to student growth has been recognized. Both S.E. Gross Middle School and Brook Park Elementary were named Exemplary by the State Board of Education.  This status lists us as being in the top 10% of schools in the state.  While excited, we know this report is only one measure.  As always, we will continue to strive to provide the best educational opportunities for the students of Brookfield and LaGrange Park that focuses on student’s continual growth.  Thank you to all who have been fantastic partners in education.

Remember to bring a packed lunch to both field trips on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Please think about a spirit wear purchase, which not only shows your school spirit, but also helps support our student council as this is their first activity they are running for the year.

As the weather begins to turn colder there is an increase of vehicular traffic at drop off/pickup for middle school students.  While we do not have issues during these times yet, please keep in mind that dropping your student off a block away and allowing them to walk towards the school greatly assists in congestion on Lincoln Ave.  Thank you for your assistance thus far!

Next week you will start to see the steel go up at SEG for the gymnasium.  With the work going on inside; the elevator shaft has been completed, structural reinforcements added and the floors are being leveled so that full scale construction can begin in our renovated portions.

A few messages from the PTO:

PTO Membership Update:  We currently have 35 families and 15 teachers signed up for the PTO.  We would LOVE to see this number increase!  Please consider joining the PTO so we can keep providing social activities for our children and the teachers with much needed materials.

Fall Club Signup

Attached you will find the Fall offerings of extracurricular activities for students to get involved in at SEG.  Some of the programs in the attached document are year-round programs, others are for the Fall season.  There will be Winter and Spring program offerings as well, which will come out at a later date. The great thing about Winter and Spring sessions are that students can suggest to teachers what type of programs they would like to have offered in the school.  This new format is meant to give students more offerings than ever before and be responsive to the needs of the students and school community.  With that said, clubs will only run if there are 10 or more members.  Clubs are driven through student interest.  We hope to have many of our clubs full this year.

Please read through the document and click the link in it to fill out the Google form with your student’s interest.  Payment will come after we have determined if the club has enough members to be conducted.  You will be contacted by the club moderator about entrance into the program and payment will then be made through My School Bucks.  For questions please contact the SEG office and they will help answer any additional questions you may have with programming.

Please make sure to read through the attached document for all the details about extracurricular opportunities.

During cold weather there is a higher rate of students being dropped off at S.E. Gross Middle School via car.  This can cause increased congestion around the school, especially on Broadway.  Those people who decide to queue their cars in front of the fire station, and perform a U-Turn, run the risk of delaying emergency personnel.

A few suggestions:

  • Lincoln Ave. is available for drop off of students and is less congested than Broadway.
  • Those using Lincoln Ave. for drop off should consider continuing down Lincoln Ave. as an exit, instead of turning eastbound on Grand Blvd.Exiting that way will only increase congestion.
  • Any arterial street leading to S.E.G. can be used for drop off as well.

Please know that traffic has not been a significant factor.  Average wait time has been around 20 seconds and the highest congestion rate lasts a short period of time, from 7:55 – 7:57am.  This message is to simply act as a reminder and offer suggestions to improve drop off on especially cold mornings.  On these especially cold days we have opened our doors earlier.  It looks like after Monday we will begin a warming trend and see more seasonable temperatures.

Winter Weather

Please be advised that students waiting for school to begin should arrive at SEG no earlier than 7:45am.  Students who are meeting with a teacher and have coordinated a time with the teacher may arrive earlier.

In winter weather students are let inside at 7:45am when temperatures are below 20 degrees.  We monitor weather conditions each day to make the best decisions for our students.  Students are let in at 7:45am because there is adequate supervision for the 420 students that attend SEG.

Please click HERE to see information provided by the National Weather Service on temperature, wind-chill, and frostbite.  When students arrive at 7:45 and enter the building at 7:57 there is no risk of harm in the 12 minutes they are on the playground.  Student safety is a priority, which is why we take into account this advice from the CDC.

Finally, please assist us in making sure your student is dressed for the weather.  We have noticed many students coming without hats, gloves, coats, and wearing shorts.  After having discussions with students they are choosing not to bring these things, it is not because they cannot acquire them.

Thank you for your assistance.

This year PTO is offering the SCRIP program as a fundraiser.  Instead of selling magazine, chocolate, or cookie dough (as in the past) you simply purchase gift cards for yourself or as gifts to the places you normally shop.  The PTO gets a percentage of that card purchase from the company.  Cards can be purchased instantly online.  Buying something on Amazon?  Purchase an Amazon SCRIP card before making that purchase on Amazon and instantly donate back to your school.  Information is enclosed in the weekly email.  Thank you for supporting the PTO and students of SEG!

Mastery Connect Error

Good evening,

It seems that there is an issue with parent activation emails sent from Mastery Connect.  We are working with the vendor to produce a solution to this error.  We hope to have this resolved in a timely manner.  Thank you for your patience while we work towards the solution.

Once in the parent portal we hope that you will appreciate the ability to see your student’s progress on a more regular basis on their assessments here at school.  Many have asked for the ability to see student’s performance on a more regular basis and we are working towards giving that ability.  Sometime technology is not our friend; tonight is one of those nights.

Again, my sincere apologies for the error and I will continue to push Mastery Connect to produce a timely solution.

Best Regards,

Ryan Evans

Letters of Support

Dear SEG Parent or Guardian,

We are asking that you prepare a letter for your child covering a few topics that we feel are important to the success of students at S.E. Gross Middle School.  This letter is meant to be a connection piece between school and home.  So often students feel that they navigate middle school alone, and we want to let them know that they have support both here and at home.  The students will read your letter privately on the first day in their homerooms.

Click below for information regarding the contents of the letter.

Due date: August 10th.

Track Meet Canceled

The meet is canceled due to an unsafe running surface.  Our pavement was still wet before it started raining lightly over an hour ago.  It stopped, but started raining again.  There is a very small chance that the surface will be dry by 4:00.  We are seeing a cloudy afternoon with scattered showers which would slow down any chance of our surface drying.  We must hold the student's safety as the number one priority when trying to host track meets at SEG on asphalt pavement.  Thank you for your understanding.

Don't forget S.E. Gross Middle School's Fun Friday this week!  The event lasts from 3:15pm - 5:15pm.  Cost is $2 and concessions will be for sale.  This transition event is for students only.  Parents should drop off students at the main entrance on Broadway Ave. and those that are picking up should do so promptly at 5:15pm.  Students will be dismissed from the same door.  For more information click HERE for a list of events.

Graduation Reminder

As a continued reminder to the previous postings and information sent home, graduation will be held on May 27th at 7:00pm in Riverside Brookfield High School’s gymnasium.  Doors to the gymnasium will open at 6:30pm.  There are no tickets for this event, as has been practice in the past, but we do ask that you keep the number of guests to a limited amount.  Inviting over 10 guests can begin to put strain on the large facility we have secured.  We have moved our graduation to accommodate the increased enrollment and to accommodate families.  Please be respectful of this.

From 5:00 - 6:30pm photographers from Van Gogh Photography will be present to take a family photo of the graduate receiving their pin and ribbon from their parent.  We encourage you to partake in the pinning.  Please plan on arriving early so that you can secure a photo of this moment.  A professional photo will also be taken of the student receiving their diploma. Van Gogh will distribute information on how to purchase these photos at the event.

On graduation day eighth grade students will spend their morning at Riverside Brookfield High School rehearsing for graduation.  They will receive a pizza lunch that day courtesy of the SEG PTO.  Eighth grade students will be dismissed at 1:00pm on this day from SEG. A shuttle bus will run from SEG to Brook Park for eighth grade students that normally take the after school bus.

Open House

Dear Parent/Guardian,

The staff of S.E. Gross Middle School cordially invites you to join them for our annual Open House event on Tuesday, May 5th hosted from 6:00pm – 7:30pm.  At this event you can walk the halls of SEG, talk with the staff, and view work your student has completed during the academic year.  There is no schedule of movement for this event as with curriculum night, and parents may come and go as they please.

This time should be spent discussing the successes of the year and viewing the fantastic work produced by students.  It is also a time where you can visit the grade level your child will be attending next year, and get a preview of what they will be accomplishing.

Incoming sixth grade parents will meet in the auditorium at 6:00pm for a brief welcome and presentation by administration on different important topics for their newly arrived 6th grader in the 2015 – 2016 school year.

We hope to see many of you at this event!

SEG Parent Newsletter and Friday Mail

S.E. Gross Middle School will be undergoing a change in the way that we communicate with our parents.  Beginning with our first newsletter, we will be sending out weekly emails to all parents who have provided their email address in their registration packets. The emails will include electronic copies of all flyers that have been submitted to the school.  Also, twice a month the email will come with a newsletter highlighting different topics around the school and issues important to your child’s education.  These emails will arrive on Friday of each week.    They can also be found on our school website at www.district95.org/ under the quick link, warrior newsletters.

During this transition period we will send home paper copies of mail through the month of November. After Thanksgiving break paper communication will be minimal from the school.  This decision was reached through input from staff and parents on how best to get information to our school community, and will hopefully foster an even greater partnership between home and school.

SEG Votes: Halloween Costumes are Back!

Students at SEG have begun the year strong.  Students have shown a strong sense of pride and dedication in the classroom.  They have also decreased discipline infractions tremendously from last year.  Because of these strong positives the students were offered the choice of a one-hour celebration in November or the ability to dress up on Halloween.  The student’s have chosen to dress up for Halloween this year!  Students will be given rules for dress next week in homeroom and will be expected to adhere to them.  There will be costume contests for the students to participate in as well.  It has been many years since SEG students were allowed to dress up and we are excited to bring this tradition back for students and staff to enjoy!

At the end of the day a fire alarm in the basement of SEG was damaged, on accident, when an item was being moved.  This triggered the alarm, which coincided with dismissal.  Students who needed to get back into the building waited 20 minutes while the fire department cleared the alarm.  Students behaved very well during this situation and buses were held until 3:30.  Our emergency phone system was used to inform all listed guardians of the situation.  All evening events will still be held on Wednesday 10/15.

Remember that next week is Teacher Appreciation Week.  Having your student write their teacher a sincere note often times is the best form of appreciation.

Below is a message from the SEG PTO:

The 8th Grade Masquerade Ball will be held on Friday, May 20th at the Brookfield Village Hall. Tickets for the event are $7 and will be sold during 8th grade lunch next week.

We are asking parents for donations for the dessert table, the drinks station and the candy table. Please consider contributing to this special event. Here is the Sign Up Genius with all of the information:

Student Schedules

Student schedules have been mailed.  Please call us if you have any questions.    The names of our math classes have changed to reflect the move to the common core standards.  You may hace noticed a CC Math on your child's schedule.  This stands for common core math.

Enjoy the last few days of summer.  We look forward to the return of the students on August 21.

The staff of S.E. Gross Middle School cordially invites you to join them for the annual Open House event on Monday, May 2nd hosted from 6:00pm – 7:30pm.  At this event you can walk the halls of SEG, talk with the staff, and view work your student has completed during the academic year.  There is no schedule of movement for this event, as with curriculum night, and parents may come and go as they please.

This time should be spent discussing the successes of the year and viewing the fantastic work produced by students.  It is also a time where you can visit the grade level your child will be attending next year, and get a preview of what they will be accomplishing.

Incoming sixth grade parents will meet in the auditorium at 6:00pm for a brief welcome and presentation by administration on different important topics for their 6th grader in the 2016 – 2017 school year.

We hope to see many of you at this event!

Thank You!!

I just wanted to pass along our thanks to the community.  The donations of water have been great!!  It really shows how appreciative everyone is of the work done here at S.E. Gross.  We have been able to keep our students hydrated throughout the day.

Thanks again for your donations and I hope the heat will break soon!!

Sincerely,

The Staff & Students of S.E. Gross

Elective request forms went home today with students.  Paper copies were provided to students in order to return the last page with the electives the student wishes to take next year.  Please take time to read the document, which has detailed explanations of how elective requests are made and fulfilled.  Also, make it a collaborative effort between yourself and your child.  Each stakeholder should have a voice in what is chosen.

We know that sometimes paper documents do not make it home with your child so listed below are the links to elective request forms.  Please remember to use the document for the grade your child will be in next year.

Click below for electronic versions of the elective request forms.

6th Grade  DUE DATE MAY 4th

7th Grade  DUE DATE APRIL 22nd

8th Grade  DUE DATE APRIL 22nd

Also, please consider allowing your child to give service to their community at Project NICE on April 23rd.  Initial signups have been disappointing and this is a great community event each year.   The waiver is once again attached to the weekly information packet.   We hope you will allow your child to participate.

A message from the PTO:

The PTO is still seeking nominations for the Board for the 2016-2017 school year.  Positions needed are Treasurer, Corresponding Secretary and at least one Vice President.  If you are interested or know someone who is interested in serving on the Board please let President Lorene Heninger know.  The PTO does a lot of things for the kids at SE Gross, the teachers at SE Gross and for projects in the building.  It is a great cause and we need people to help make sure all of the programs and activities continue onto the year school year.  Thank you for supporting the SE Gross Warriors and the SE Gross PTO.  Contact Lorene Heninger at lorene.heninger@gmail.com.

Please remember that Project NICE is NEXT SATURDAY, April 28th, at Ehlert Park!  We would love to see many of our students coming out to support the community at this event.  Students do not need permission slips this year, they simply need to let their social studies teacher know they are coming so we can plan for how many students will be there.  A shovel and/or rake are the best tools for the tasks that will be occurring at the park.  Please have your student bring one.  If you do not have one there will be plenty to share!  Drop off is at 8:20am near the Shields Ave. firehouse parking lot.  More specific details are included in weekly email.  See you there!

Keep your eyes on the calendar, there are SO many awesome events occurring in our final 5 weeks of the school year!

Happy Spring Fling Dance Friday everyone!

We look forward to an awesome Spring Fling dance tonight for our Warrior Nation!  The doors open at 6:30pm and the dance ends at 8:30pm.  When picking up please know the parking lot is very congested and you might want to talk with your child about pickup on Broadway and/or carpooling.  Thank you to the PTO for putting on so many great events this year!

Students did very well this week taking their PARCC exams.  We asked the students to try their hardest and we believe that occurred.  The 6th graders were able to earn a special event day later in the year and 7th and 8th grade will now be allowed to have cellphone usage during their lunch periods as they have in years past.  Makeups for those that were absent will begin next week.  Good job Warriors!

Continue to keep an eye on the school calendars each week!  There are many things happening here at SEG in our final two months!

A few notes about today's email attachment:

1. SEG has launched District 95's first Facebook account!  Make sure to read more in the attachment.

2. Last week the date for the Band/Chorus concert during the school day was correct but they day of the week was incorrectly listed.  That is updated in the mailing.

3. As a reminder sixth grade parents should be returning outdoor education materials to the school.  The informational parent meeting is on Tuesday, March 22nd at 5:30pm in the second floor conference room.

4. 8th grade parents who have been having trouble with the PTO's ordering information for 8th grade shirts can use the attached form to purchase the shirt and turn in the order form to the school.

5. Project NICE documents are enclosed.  This service event has been a huge part of S.E. Gross for nearly a decade.  All students and parents are welcome to help!  Turn in signed waivers to your homeroom teacher any time leading up to the event.  Students will also receive material on this event and printed waivers next week.

Once again, today’s email download has quite a bit of information.  7th grade parents please pay attention to the letter from Riverside Brookfield High School that talks about placement criteria, which will impact the 7th grade student’s placements when they attend RBHS in 2019-2020 as Freshman.  RBHS has stated they would now like to also use 7th grade PARCC scores as one of their placement criteria.  They will look at other criteria as well, but this is a change from in the past.  We will work with RBHS once PARCC is no longer the state mandated test (2018-2019) to see what they will use in the future.

PARCC tests will be administered on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of next week.  We look forward to our students working diligently on this state mandated assessment.  Please remember that the state does not allow districts to put opt out procedures in place.  All students must be presented the PARCC test.

We hope many students can join us on April 28th at the Project NICE event at Ehlert Park in Brookfield!  This is a great way for students to be rooted in service!  Please think about carving out some time in their schedule to let them give back to the community!  Also at Ehlert Park, on the 14th, will be the first ever PTO Color Run!  We hope you can join in this fun event!

Now that we are back from Spring Break the students are in a mad dash until the end of the year!  There are so many awesome events planned for the students!  We hope you can join us on many of them!  Keep your eyes on the calendars!

A few notes:

Please make sure to pay attention to the school calendars in the next few week’s emails.  The last few months are nonstop with school events!

Today your student is coming home with their third quarter report card.  Also, in the packet are their 2016-2017 PARCC exam results.  In today’s email is a letter from Dr. Kuzniewski about the PARCC exam.  Please remember that our next administration of this exam will be on April 10, 11, 12.  This will be the last year of the PARCC exam as the State Board of Education has decided to move away from it as our state’s standardized assessment.

Please remember to return your student’s signed manila report card envelope to their homeroom teacher on the Tuesday we return.

Students will be going through Erin’s Law training, which is state mandated in the next few weeks in health class.  Please see the letter in today’s email from our school social worker Caitlin Morris.

Project NICE is right around the corner as well!  If you and your student want to participate there is information in today’s packet of information.  The school has signed a group waiver this year so there is no need for individual signed waivers as in the past.

RBHS Placement Test: Urgent

Good morning,

This morning Riverside Brookfield High School sent each of their feeder schools an email outlining the process for 8th grade student placement tests.  They have asked that this information be distributed immediately because there are dramatic differences from past years.  By following the link below you will have access to their information.

A few notes from that information:

  • The date for student placement testing is now October 1st.In the past testing was typically done in January.
  • According to RBHS there is NO makeup date so it is vital to have your student in attendance.
  • RBHS will now use the PSAT test instead of the EXPLORE test.
  • Online registration form must be completed by September 23rd.

District 95 is embarking on an era of new technology for all of our students so that we may use it to enhance the great learning that is already taking place in the classroom. With that, on Monday every 6th grade student will be assigned his or her own Chromebook device. This device is a great responsibility for our students and we know that they will fully embrace the opportunity and take great care with these district owned devices. As these are district owned devices they will remain at school each day. Students have the ability to access all of their Google Suite apps such as Mail, Drive, and Documents via any home device that is internet capable. They currently use the Google Suite in their classes. Additionally, our computer lab is open from 3:00 - 3:45 Monday - Thursday for students to work on computers.

Students are let in at 7:45 because there is adequate supervision for the 420 students that attend SEG.  Prior to that time students cannot be supervised.

Please click HERE  to see information provided by the CDC on temperature, wind-chill, and frostbite.  When students arrive at 7:45 and enter the building at 7:57 there is no risk of harm in the 12 minutes they are on the playground.  Student safety is a priority, which is why we take into account this advice from the CDC.

A few reminders:

-Please have your student turn in the parent teacher conference form to their homeroom teacher.  Times are filled on a first come first serve basis and times are filling fast.  Forms were included in the report card that was mailed home.

-Veteran’s Day, November 11th, the school will have an assembly where we welcome and honor our community’s veterans.  The assembly will begin at 9:30am.

-Please volunteer for your student’s grade level events that the PTO coordinates, specifically Fun Nights.  Low chaperone turnout will result in cancellation of events.  These events are great outlets for our students and we want to give them these opportunities.  However, if we do not have enough chaperones we cannot run the events safely and in the manner they need to be conducted.  The Halloween dance had fantastic supervision; we need assistance with the other events as well.  The Eighth Grade fun night scheduled for November 13 will be moved to a date to be determined.

Thank you!

Don’t forget that tonight is the PTO Halloween dance from 6:30pm – 8:30pm at SEG!  Information about it is once again included in this mailing.  A student leaving early is discouraged, and is only allowed if a parent picks them up.

Also, students may dress up for Halloween again this year!  This is a tradition we were happy to begin four years ago!  We will hold a costume contest with our faculty judges, and also kick off the season of giving!  On Halloween please have your student bring a nonperishable item to donate to a local food pantry, if you have the ability to give.  This donation will help community members in need.

Thank you to the students who participated in Fall Project N.I.C.E. in Brookfield last Friday!  The dedication by the students and Mrs. Janetopoulos was fantastic and the work they did was incredibly meaningful to impact the community!  In the spring we hope to have MANY students and staff out working in the community to beautify various locations at Spring Project N.I.C.E!

Please make sure to return your parent teacher conference forms with your student.  They were included in the report card envelope, which is also to be signed and returned as a form of confirmation that you received your child’s reports.  Your child’s homeroom teacher will confirm an appointment time with you via email.

Remember to visit SEG's revamped daily homework, classwork and assessment calendars.  This is a great way to begin discussions with your child nightly about what they are doing in class each day.

The PTO has partnered with Nothing Bundt Cake for a fundraiser. The flier is included and the PTO wants to make sure that everyone is aware that you can order cakes during the time period our fundraiser runs for future orders you want to put in early.  So order that holiday season cake during our fundraiser and the SEG PTO will get credit for that order and you can pick it up months later!  Thank you to our PTO!

8th grade parents please remember to register for the upcoming Riverside Brookfield High School entrance exam.  I am including this information for a final time in our mailing.

Another note about RBHS that they would like to share are their procedures for attendance of students at RBHS events.  I am listing them below:

1. All students must arrive with a parent.  Any student without a parent will not be allowed into the game.

2. Student's need to bring their ID cards.

3. If a student leaves the game, they may not return.

4. No backpacks will be allowed in the game.

Good afternoon,

The email for student mail this week will be delayed.  Our student management company's servers shut down limiting our ability to send emails the way we normally do each week.  This outage is nationwide and we are being told that it will be solved by 5pm tonight.  When we have access to our systems again we will send out the student mail.  In the meantime please click below for the information that is normally mailed.

SEG Student Mail

Each Friday an email will be sent with all student mail.  It is rare that we give paper mail to students.  This is an effort to both conserve paper and to make sure that parents have a reliable method of delivery.

You may also locate it on our main page and under Warrior Newsletters on the left side of the school webpage.

At our most recent Institute Day the teachers of SEG spent time building classroom webpages via Google sites.  SEG continues to move into the use of Google Suite as our platform for technology integration.  We will continue to develop these sites as the year continues, but on teacher webpages you can find information about classes, information about the teacher, and helpful documents for their classes.  We have also updated our homework, classwork, and assessment calendars for the grade levels.  The new format can be more easily seen via computer and mobile device.  On this page you can see what your student did each day in class and hopefully combat the nightly answer of, "I don't know," when you ask what your student did at school that day!  This is also a great way to foster a conversation about what occurs in the classroom.  If you have bookmarked the old pages please delete them.  Recently we have been getting asked by parents for permission to access the old documents, which no longer exist.

Don't forget to join us on Tuesday, August 29th from 6pm - 7:30pm for Curriculum Night!  You will be receiving your student's schedule from them on Monday so please ask your child for it.  Copies will be available upon arrival as well for those that do not receive them from their children.

SEG Eclipse Information

On Monday we have an incredibly exciting event occurring with the solar eclipse.  SEG has worked in partnership with the SEG Parent Teacher Organization and the Brook Park Council to acquire NASA certified viewing glasses.  Thank you to these wonderful organizations!  We will be taking students outside prior to, during, and after totality of the eclipse, for a total of 20 minutes.  Students will be monitored by their teachers and instructed when to look at the eclipse and for how long.  We will only allow viewing for short periods of time lasting no more than 30 seconds at a time.  There are many rules to follow and we want to keep our students safe while offering them this opportunity that has not presented itself since 1918!  Safety is our priority!

At the end of this email is a link to a viewing form, which must be signed by a parent or guardian in order for a student to participate.  If it is not returned, the student will not participate in the event and instead see a brief documentary focused around the eclipse.  This form will be distributed in science classes on Wednesday.  We ask that you return the form to your child’s homeroom teacher no later then Friday, but the earlier the better!

Science classes will be taking Friday’s class to go over information about eclipses and the safety requirements that students will have to adhere to in order to participate.  Their homeroom teachers will reiterate safety requirements when students go outside on Monday.

I want to thank you in advance for allowing us this opportunity to teach your student about this amazing natural phenomenon.
