Superstar Weekly Newsletter 3-08-24

Superstar families,

What an outstanding week for all of our K, 2, 3, 4 and 5 (1st this next Monday) students that had a chance this week to travel the world to experience so many cultures and countries. A huge shout out and thank you to the BPC, parent volunteers, Ms. Morrissey, Mrs. Hartrich, classroom teachers and Mrs. Alexander. It was also great to see so many students and parents at the BPC Cultural Night on Wednesday. This is always an amazing event and the food was outstanding!

Lastly, we would like to thank all of the parents that have donated coffee and other items to the staff. We are very grateful to all of the parents for the incredible donations! There are a few items before the weekend:

IAR Testing:

IAR (Illinois Assessment of Readiness) testing will take place the next two weeks (March 11-March 22). Third, Fourth and Fifth grade will be taking two Reading tests and three Math tests and grades K-2 do not take this state required assessment. Grades K-2 will be encouraging their grade level buddies by doing special things throughout the IAR Tests.

The schedule is as follows but could change due to teacher absences (teachers will reach out with any changes):

Grade 3

10:50-12:05 ELA (3/12 and 3/14)

10:50-11:50 Math (3/13, 3/19 and 3/20)

Grade 4

9:00-10:45 ELA (3/19 and 3/20)

 10:00-11:15 Math ((3/13, 3/14 and 3/15)

Grade 5

11:30-1:00 ELA (3/11 and 3/12)

11:30-12:30 Math (3/13 and 3/14)

9:05-10:05 Math (3-15)

This test is taken on the students Chromebook and it is important that it is charged daily. It is also important for all students to have working headphones because in some of the tests it is required to listen to a speech or passage.  As always, our school goal is that the students perform their best on the test.

During the IAR Test gum chewing or having mints will be allowed but of course is optional. As parents you may also supply another healthy alternative. We will provide sugar free gum (Trident/Extra) and mints (LifeSavers PepOmint and Spearmints)  but you also can have your child bring their own to enjoy during testing.  After the testing is complete, gum and candy will not be allowed during class time.

You can help your child to do his or her best by following these guidelines:

Make sure he/she gets ample sleep.

Provide a nutritious breakfast each morning.

Be Prompt.  School begins at 8:00.

Send your child to school with a smile, a hug and just ask them to try their best!

As always, we appreciate your support and cooperation. Please contact Mr. Sorensen with any questions.

One School One Book:

Thanks to all that participated in this year's One School, One Book! We learned so much about toys and want to share with other kids. The Carole Robertson Center for Learning, a non-profit in Chicago, is running a spring break camp with the theme "Toys Around the World." If your family would like to donate your copy of Toys to share with the camp, we are collecting books for the next week. Please send in your copy and there will be a box outside Room 207 for your child to drop off. Thanks for your help!

Social Emotional Learning:

This week, students in kindergarten, first grade, and second grade learned about solving problems, particularly conflict with other people.  Students in third grade, fourth grade, and fifth grade began learning about thinking errors.  The School Social Work Corner is a great place to visit for more information on what students practice during our school wide social emotional learning lessons.
